Madden NFL 2000 is categorized as a football video game. It is the fourth 3D installment in the Madden NFL series. This the second game in the franchise that does not feature John Madden exclusively on the cover in North America (the only other instance being Madden NFL ’95). Typically, Madden is prominently featured on the cover, alongside a well-known image of Barry Sanders in an action shot in the background. The European PAL edition only displays Dorsey Levens on its cover. The introductory video in the CD-ROM versions includes an unnamed track by rapper Ludacris.

The franchise mode in Madden NFL 2000 has received some upgrades, allowing multiple owners to join the same season. Unlike its predecessor, this version lets users delegate off-season tasks to the CPU, such as re-signing or releasing players and drafting new talent. Before starting a franchise, players must include all 31 coaches from the 1999 NFL season, which is a requirement unique to the PC.
